Urdaneta,Pangasinan-True
to his commitment of helping the Calapeño poor but deserving
students to finish their studies, Calapan City Mayor Paulino
Salvador “Doy” C. Leachon visited the City to personally observe
the Urdaneta City University (UCU) last November 20.
With the vision
of establishing the
Calapan
City
College
this coming year of 2008, Mayor Leachon’s visit to the City aimed
to know the different strategies on how the City of
Urdaneta established the
UCU.
Together with
Mayor Leachon in the Lakbay-Aral were the different officials of
the City Government of Calapan named City Administrator Atty.
Antonio “Jojo” S. Perez, Jr., former Calapan City Mayor Carlos
Brucal, City Education Officer Marilyn E. Manigbas, City Councilor
and Chairman of the Committee on Appropriations Jose Leynes, City
Councilor and Chairman of the Committee on Education Jojie
Malapitan, City Youth and Sports Development Officer Marvin L.
Panahon, City Accountant Charity Chavez, City Engineer Benjamin
Acedera, Executive Asst IV Dr. Rene Colocar and City Information
Officer Marvie D. Mañibo.
The group of
Mayor Leachon were welcomed by Urdaneta City Mayor Amadeo R.
Perez, Jr. and some of his City Councilors and Department Heads
who are involved in the operation of the UCU. They lectured the
group on how they are administering the operation of the UCU
including its birth pains and history.
It was also
noted that the UCU was a self-sustaining university managed by the
City Government of Urdaneta. It started as a Community College way
back in 1966 thru the effort of Dr. Pedro T. Orata who believed in
the principle “Education for All” and who had the passion of
providing education to those less fortunate youth who want to
learn. The university started with a two-year General Education
Course with 144 poor but deserving students.
The community
college was called the City College of Urdaneta in the year 2001
and was converted into a full blown university in the year 2005.
It was also named as the First Character School in Region I due to
its outstanding academic excellence and character transformation
since its creation.
Since 1966 up to present,
UCU’s operation is being sustained by its own income coming
from tuition fees of university students who are not scholars of
the City Government.
With the
Lakbay-Aral, Mayor Leachon has gathered all the information
necessary for his desire in establishing the Calapan City College
in the year 2008 which will surely benefit the deserving students
of the City of Calapan. |
