In line with the campaign for a Garbage Free City, the Aksyon Agad
Anti Littering Task Force have already apprehend more than 100
violators of the City Council’s Anti-Littering Ordinance.
In a official report submitted to City Environment and Natural
Resources Chief Wilfredo Landicho, 103 individuals where caught
disobeying the city ordinance against littering. They were ordered
to pay the corresponding fine or render community service by
helping street sweepers in maintaining cleanliness along J. P.
Rizal St., Calapan City’s main thoroughfare in the Central
Business District.
“At first, there was resistance in the implementation of our
ant-littering drive. Some refuses to pay the fine or render
community service. Nevertheless, lately, it has slowly become a
way of life for Calapeños to comply with the ordinance especially
when elements of our task force are around the vicinity,” Landicho
said. However, Landicho still acknowledges that much is still to
be done in order to really attain a garbage free city. The City
Environment Chief identified that from 10:00 PM up to 2:00 AM,
some residents and night vendors in the Central Business District
continuously violate the ordinance by throwing their garbage
everywhere under the cover of the darkness. “We are now looking
into this and formulating ways to prevent such, “ Landicho
added.
Aside from the Anti-Littering Drive, other components of the
campaign for a garbage free city will be aggressively implemented
in 2008. Landicho revealed that the search for the Cleanest and
Greenest Barangay will be revived. They are also contemplating on
the idea of putting up a shredding machine in the City Public
Market so that waste will be segregated from the source itself. A
campaign for the reduction of the use of plastic bags in the
public market and other stores and groceries is also on the
offing.
The Garbage Free City Project is a flagship project of City Mayor
Doy C. Leachon as part of the Aksyon Agad People’s Agenda. |
